These are the terms for using Piper, a tool for learning mathematics and supporting those who teach it, run by Ridian Technologies LLC. Using Piper means you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use Piper. That is a legitimate choice: Piper is a supplement to your course, not a requirement of it.
Who runs Piper
Ridian Technologies LLC is independent of Weber State University. The university's role is simply this: your instructor decided to make Piper available to your class. Weber State does not operate Piper and is not responsible for it.
Your class key
Piper is available to enrolled classes through a class key your instructor gives you. The key is for your class. Please don't share it with anyone outside it, and don't post it anywhere public.
Piper can be wrong
Piper is an AI. It can be wrong, and sometimes it will be. It can state a fact incorrectly, make an arithmetic error, or explain an idea in a way that is misleading. It can sound confident while doing so.
So do not treat Piper as the authority. Your textbook, your instructor, and your own reasoning all outrank it. If Piper and your textbook disagree, trust the textbook and ask your instructor.
By design, Piper asks before it tells. It is built to help you think through mathematics, not to hand you answers. It is not a homework-answering service, and it will not act like one.
Academic integrity
Your course and your institution set the rules on what help is allowed. Those rules govern, not Piper. The way Piper is designed is not permission to use it on any particular assignment. If you are not sure whether using Piper on something is allowed, ask your instructor before you do. You are responsible for the work you submit.
What not to enter
Don't enter your name, your student ID, contact information, details about another person, or anything confidential. Piper doesn't need any of it to help with math. The Privacy Notice explains why this matters.
What's not allowed
You may not:
- Get around access controls or rate limits.
- Try to extract Piper's underlying instructions or prompts.
- Use Piper to generate harmful content.
- Send automated traffic to Piper.
- Share the class key publicly.
- Resell or redistribute access.
We may revoke access for anyone who does these things.
Safety monitoring, and what Piper is not
An automated safety observer checks messages for signals that someone may be at risk. If it flags an exchange, that exchange is recorded and a person at Ridian may read it. It is not surveillance, it is not a disciplinary tool, and it does not report on you individually to your instructor. The one exception: if we believe someone may be in danger, we may contact people who can help, which could include your instructor, university support services, or emergency services. The Privacy Notice has the details.
Piper is not a crisis service, and nobody is watching conversations in real time. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact emergency services, or call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Weber State's counseling services are also there for students.
Research
Conversations are stored for research on how students learn with Piper. That research has been reviewed by Weber State University's Institutional Review Board. Transcripts are de-identified before analysis, and your instructor sees summaries or de-identified findings rather than individual conversations. You can opt out: email ryan@ridiantechnologies.com and we'll send you a link that turns research logging off on your device, with Piper working as usual. The Privacy Notice explains this in full.
A pilot service
Piper is a pilot. It is provided as is. It may be unavailable at times, and it may change or end without notice.
Ownership
Piper's interface, instructional design, prompts, and logic belong to Ridian Technologies LLC. What you type remains yours. By using Piper, you give us permission to process and store it as described in the Privacy Notice.
No warranties
Piper is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. In particular, we do not warrant that Piper's mathematical or instructional content is correct, complete, or suitable for any purpose, or that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Ridian Technologies LLC is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, grades, or academic standing, arising from your use of Piper or your inability to use it. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Alabama, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
Changes
If these terms change, we will update the date at the top. Continuing to use Piper after a change means you accept the updated terms.
